What better way to spend one-third of your life than sleeping? Sleeping is more complex then people may think. There are actually two different kinds of sleep. The mind and body are more active then people could imagine. There are different stages at which people sleep during. Sleep is necessary to live. Even though it is important does not mean there are no disadvantages. There are different kinds of sleep disorders that many people have been diagnosed with. What else to do during sleep than dream? There are many things about dreams that people would not even think about knowing. There are different types of dreams that people have. Sleeping is more involved than just laying your head on a pillow and closing your eyes.
People sleep while having either rapid eye movement (REM) or non rapid eye movement (NREM). REM is considered the "dream time" because that is when most of our dreams occur. REM is common to everyone in the world, including blind people. Twenty to twenty-five percent of REM time is when we have our dreams. While newborns have large REM periods and young children have short REM periods, the elderly have slower rhythms of REM.
NREM is the rest of the time in which REM stops. People can still dream during this time. The dreams are little, thinking dreams while you’re brain thinks of the upcoming dreams. The activity in our body and mind slows but not all the way off.
The mind is always awake when we sleep and when we are awake, that is why the mind so active. People can’t think about what they will dream before they go to sleep, dreaming is involuntary. The more time people spend not dreaming, the next time they go to bed is when they’ll make up for all of the dreams that they missed out on. The mental activity that is had during sleep is when people dream. The dreams seem more real during REM than NMREM because more mental activity is going on. The mind when people are sleeping is exactly how it acts when the person is awake. People’s brain acts on its own so that people absolutely can’t decide what they will dream about. People can still taste, smell, hear, and feel pain while they are sleeping, and it may affect the dream they are having. People absolutely have to have dreams to live.
While the mind is awake, the body is considered asleep, but the brain doesn’t stop working. Muscular activity had could be included to what the people are doing in their dream. When someone’s eyes move, it means there is brain activity, which equals dreaming. The body’s heart beats and the lungs breath, but the breathing is fast and not smooth. The moment a person starts moving again is when the dream has ended. The wrist muscles are also active while people are sleeping, while the limb muscles don’t move. In 80% of dreams, there are movements in the lower body.
There are four stages in which people sleep during. Stage one is between five and ten minutes long. The eyes move slowly around even though the person isn’t sleeping yet. The REMs aren’t continuous and the eyes can only move left-right and up-down. People can easily be awoken during stage one. Unclear thoughts can run across the mind while starting to go on to stage two.
Stage two is considered a light sleep. You are still easily awoken and if you are, there is no memory of what happened while you were sleeping. If you aren’t awoken though, the eyes don’t continue to move. The rate at which the heart beats slows down and the body temperature decreases, also.
Stage three and stage four are almost the same, they are considered deep sleep. This is the time period in which children wet the bed, have night terrors, and sleep walk. The heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and the body the temperature all decrease ever more than in stage two. There is no body movement during these two stages. Though we are not awoken easily, it may take a couple of minutes to become less groggy. During stage four only, loud noises that are everyday don’t bother the sleeper and if someone was awoken, their mind would be blank.
As we start to dream in stage three and four, the visions seem as real as they would in real life. Our breathing is irregular, going from fast to slow. The body doesn’t move and the muscles relax. Our blood pressure and heart rate increase and are going at irregular rates. Neurons near our eyes tell our body when it is time to fall asleep.
Sleep is vital to living. Each age group has a different amount of time that we need to sleep. Infants should sleep sixteen hours a day. Children need at least ten hours a night. Teens should sleep about nine hours per night. Adults should have seven to eight hours per night while elders need nine hours. Sleep is needed to recall old memories. To have a happier mood. To let our body and mind grow. Also, to strengthen our immune systems so that we aren’t sick more than we should be.
Sleep disorders can be classified in three different groups: insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Insomnia is when people sleep less often than they should, which is the most common disorder among people, especially women and elderly. Sleep apnea is when people stop breathing for short periods of time. Narcolepsy is when people sleep more often than they should, and they get tired in the middle of the day. These disorders can be controlled by medicine or going to therapy. Falling asleep and waking up are controlled by changes in the body.
Insomnia happens in almost everybody. Some have it longer than others, though. People can get insomnia by having stress, pain, or depression. Acute insomnia is when people have trouble sleeping from a few weeks to six months every single night. Transient insomnia is less serious than acute insomnia. Transient insomnia only lasts from a day to a few weeks. Transient insomnia can be caused by an overworked mind or a physical pain. In rare cases, people have a hereditary sleeping disorder call fatal familial insomnia, in which the person can not fall asleep. After the person has been diagnosed with that disorder, the people usually have about two years left to live.
Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where people do not breath during sleep. There are three kinds of Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common one. OSA is caused by breathing obstruction. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is when the brain delays to tell the body to breathe. CSA is caused by a stroke, a brain tumor or other malfunctions with the brain. Mixed Sleep Apnea (MSA) is a combination of OSA and CSA. MSA is when the throat collapses and no air gets to the lungs. The treatment for MSA is a combination from the treatment for OSA and the treatment for CSA.
Narcolepsy is the sleep disorder when people sleep too much. Narcolepsy is incurable. People with narcolepsy have a desire to sleep at any time during the day. Dogs have also been diagnosed with narcolepsy.
Dreams are like a play. Dreams have characters and a setting. The main character is usually the dreamer. They can be a bystander just watching the action, too. The action almost always happens to the dreamer. If the dreamer has little REM, then the dreamer has a passive role in the dream. Usually there are other characters included in the dream. Forty percent of the characters are new, but you have seen them before, just never talked to them. The characters can all change into some one else and the dreamer would not notice. The dreamer is the only person that makes the dreams up. Outside influences can be in the dream, but would not be a big factor. When you are dreaming, you are neither sleeping nor awake.
Dreams usually have more of negative emotions than positive ones. Dreams begin with problems, most of them do not get solved, though. They can be recurring or a single one. The ideas from dreams can be from memories. It can be about your daily life if it is playing during REM, or about the future if it is during NREM. If you have watched a violent film, the dreams are usually more creative and exciting. The setting of a dream is often familiar, maybe one that you see everyday or a new one you just drove by. Most dreams are either boring or not happy. Dreams are briefer than in real life, so that it is like you are going in fast forward but you can’t really tell. A dream length can be from ten minutes to an hour or more long. People usually have four or more dreams a night.
There are five different kinds of dreams that people have. The most common one is called an ordinary dream. It is either from a thought from the day or from a forgotten memory. Another kind is called a lucid dream. When you figure out that you are in a dream and you can control what is going to happen. The next is a telepathic dream. A telepathic dream is when people can speak to the dead. It can also be two living people talking to each other between their minds. Another kind of dream is a premonitory dream. A premonitory dream tells the future, it can also tell about an upcoming event. The last type of dream is a nightmare. A nightmare is a fear of something that you dream about. The dreamer is scared and can be hurt. A nightmare can also be about an unsolved problem from the past that you had forgotten about. The dreamer is not fully alert as to what is going on in the nightmare. Also, the dreamer can’t protect themselves from what is going to happen, which may be why the dreamer is so frightened. Nightmares seem "real" like it is happening to the dreamer in real life. A kind of nightmare is a night terror, which is what children have. During a night terror, the child feels like they can not breath and they have overwhelming anxiety. The child can’t move which makes them even more scared.
